The International Women’s Day saw DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin working closely with his half-sister and party MP Kanimozhi, who was recently appointed the secretary of the women’s wing.
The former Deputy Chief Minister also explained the efforts taken by the party, when it was in power to provide opportunities to women and for the betterment of their standard of living through various schemes.
He was addressing cadres here on Sunday at the valedictory of a two-day International Women’s Day celebration — Penkural (Woman’s Voice) organised by the party’s Women’s Wing.
Ms. Kanimozhi said violence against women in the form of sexual harassment bore testimony to the way society treated women. She said whether in stone quarries or in the corporate world women drew lesser salary than men.
Ms. Kanimozhi also said that women should have better self-esteem and the occasion of International Women’s Day should be observed on a par with May Day and not like Valentine’s Day.
Partymen took a pledge to treat their sons and daughters equally, empower daughters by helping them pursue higher education, not to harass wives and to take a firm stand against dowry in marriages in their family. Party’s women cadres responded to this unexpected gesture with a standing ovation.
