Siruvani Dam continues to overflow. It has been overflowing for almost 10 days now. Sources in the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board say that copious inflow into the Siruvani Dam is the reason.
The Siruvani water started overflowing on September 1 after South-West monsoon lashed the catchment areas in Kerala.
On Friday, the dam received around 3 mm rain and on Saturday 30 mm.
The TWAD Board officials who visited the dam soon after the overflow said that the situation would continue for the next 15 days.
The increased inflow into the dam and overflow has led the TWAD Board to supply 98-99 million litres a day (mld). Fifteen mld of that is for the wayside habitations. The Coimbatore Corporation gets around 83-84 mld.
Corporation sources said that with the increased supply of Siruvani, they are serving more areas.
Areas that received Pilloor water were now being fed with Siruvani and the Pilloor water that was meant for these areas were being diverted to water-deficit areas in the East Zone.
The sources also said that the Corporation would look at daily supply of Siruvani if the situation continued to remain good.
