Siddiq Ali, accomplice detained under Goondas Act

Basha’s son Siddiq Ali (37) and his accomplice Vellai Ashraf (35), who were arrested by the City Police on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to murder a city- based steel businessman near Saravanampatty, were detained under Goondas Act. The detention order signed by City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan was served to the two accused lodged in the Salem Central Prison

Bomb blasts accused gets parole

Y. Abdul Ozir (41), who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Special Court in the serial bomb blasts case, was given parole on Sunday for attending the final rites of his brother Y. Shajahan (38), of Tippu Nagar near Karumbukadai in the city. Police sources said that the convict applied for parole on compassionate grounds, which was granted on emergency basis for one-day.

House burgled

A house at Nethaji Nagar extension near Ramanathapuram was burgled during the wee hours of Sunday. Ramanathapuram police said that the occupants of the house G. Murugasamy (75), his wife, and daughter-in-law had gone to sleep by midnight after which the incident had happened. Seven-and-a-half sovereign gold jewellery, two laptops, Rs. 25,000, a tablet pc and a two-month-old Rottweiler pup were reportedly stolen. A case was registered under sections 380 (theft in a dwelling place) and 457 (house-breaking at night to commit an offence) of the Indian Penal Code.

Two arrested

The Bazaar Police arrested two persons for allegedly stabbing a fruit vendor in the city on Saturday.

The police said that S. Rajan (32) of Chokkampudur near Selvapuram was selling fruits at Kempatty Colony when the accused K. Balaji (25) and S. Saravanan (26), of Kempatty Colony, assaulted him with a knife, causing minor injuries and took away the victim’s money. The police booked the two under section 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code .
