Security has been beefed up in the city in view of the statewide bandh called on Monday by various Hindu organisations to protest against the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State general secretary ‘Auditor’ V. Ramesh.
He was hacked to death by a group of persons near his office on July 19.
City Police Commissioner A.K. Vishwanathan convened a meeting of top police officials on Sunday to review the security arrangements.
The entire strength of the city police, which ranged around 2,000, would be mobilised to provide security. The Tamil Nadu Special Police would also be deployed.
He said that legal action would be initiated anyone found attempting to forcibly close shops and disrupt the peace.
Surveillance and security has been enhanced at sensitive areas in the city.
Around ten Hindu and BJP leaders have been provided with armed security personnel as a precautionary measure, added Mr. Vishwanathan.
Rural areas
M. Sudhakar, Superintendent of Police, said that surveillance had been stepped up in rural areas and measures have been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents.
The Tamil Nadu Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug-offenders, Forest-offenders, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders, Slum-grabbers and Video Pirates Act would be invoked against those breaking public property such as State buses, he added. Around 400 cadre of the Hindu Munnani, who had staged a demonstration at Gandhipuram on Sunday without seeking permission were removed.
