Nehru Institute of Technology recently conducted its second graduation day. A release said that A.K. Raghunathan, Commissioner, Central Excise, delivered the graduation day address. Ilangovan, Manager, Group Risk Operations, National Bank of Kuwait, was the guest of honour. As many as 213 students received their degree certificates. P. Krishnakumar, Secretary and CEO, presented medals to university rank holders. Mr. Raghunathan told the students that securing a degree was not the end but a beginning. They must hone their skills if they wanted to land on a job they dreamed about. It was not subject-oriented skills but also people-oriented skills.

N.G.M. College recently conducted a graduation day for those who were students between 2009 and 2012.

A release said that the head of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore R.R. Balasundharam was the chief guest. He presented degree certificates 950 students.

College Vice Chairman S. Murugaian presided over the function. Principal P. Badri Narayanan presented the annual report.

As many as 117 students who secured good marks were felicitated.

A release said that the inauguration of the first of the many camps was held recently. Rashmi Siddharth Jagade, Sub Collector, Pollachi, inaugurated the camp. V. Narendran, Chief Medical Officer, Aravind Eye Hospital, was also present. In the first phase, the college and the hospital would conduct the camp in 10 villages. On the day of inauguration, an eye camp was held in Eripatti in Pollachi Taluk.

As many as 145 persons were screened.

R. Vinoth, research scholar, Centre for Plant Breeding and Genetics, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, won the young scientist award 2014 for his contribution to plant breeding and genetics, which was part of his Ph.D. thesis. The award was presented at the 16 Indian Agricultural Scientists and Farmers Congress- 2014, where agriculture experts and over 20 vice chancellors participated. WITH PICTURE

Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology celebrated the International Women’s Day by organising a multi-event sports contest. A release said that in ‘Power Puff Girls 2014’, the women students had an opportunity to test their physical and mental endurance. Nearly 175 students competed in kayaking, horse riding, motorcycle riding, mini cycling marathon, marathon, swimming and skipping and running events.

SNS College of Engineering recently organised an inter-collegiate cultural festival, ‘Usav ‘14’. A release said that dancing, singing, skit, group dancing, fashion show and light music were some of the events held. Around 1,000 students from a number of colleges participated. The organisers presented winners with cash prizes.

Kalaignar Karunanidhi Institute of Technology and Coimbatore Institute of Management and Technology recently organised a three-day entrepreneurship awareness camp. A release said that in the Department of Science and Technology-sponsored event, 150 students from various disciplines participated. R. Jeyaraman, Member Secretary, Centre for Entrepreneurship Development, inaugurated the camp.

Sankara Institute of Management Studies recently organised a workshop on ‘Financial planning for young investors’. A release said that in the Securities Exchange Board of India-sponsored event, N. Shanmuga Rajan, a resource person, spoke on the occasion. He spoke on capital market functions, investment avenues, management of personal finances and fundamental and technical analysis of stocks. Around 110 students participated.

Parvathy Warrier, a social activist, spoke on Indian poets and poetry, at a function held at the CMS College of Science and Commerce. She said that the Indian poets more often tend to see the dark side of life. She was inaugurating a seminar on ‘Contemporary Indian English Studies’ at the college.Chairman CMS Trust K. Rajagopal presided over the function.

NIA Educational Institutions, Pollachi, recently celebrated the International Women’s Day. Andal Priyadharshini, Head, Doordarshan Kendra, Coimbatore, spoke on the uplift of women, the role of women in society and quoted extensively from Tamil literature. Vijayalakshmi of Vijayalakshmi Hi-tech Solutions, Madurai, received NIA Yuva Sakthi Award.

Innopreneurs Club of the PSG College of Arts and Science recently organised the ‘i-Week Celebrations 2014’. A release said that Anmol Vij, founder Keyslab India, spoke on the occasion by stressing on the need for choosing the right partners to succeed in entrepreneurial ventures.

M. Rangarajan, Associate Professor, Department of Corporate Secretaryship, conducted a business quiz, which had three rounds.

The second day saw panel discussion and an idea generation competition, in which 55 teams participated. The i-Bazaar event was held on March 6 and 7, the release added.

The Citizen Consumer Club of Rathinam College of Arts and Science in association with the Coimbatore Consumer Protective Council organised a function to observe the World Consumer Rights Day. A. Vasanthakumar, Commissioner of Income Tax-II, Coimbatore , addressed the students. T.M. Sethu Anwar Hussain spoke on consumer laws and their importance. R. Manickam, CEO, Rathinam Group, welcomed the gathering.

Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science recently celebrated the World Sparrow Day.

A release said that the objective of organising the function was to celebrate human’s association with sparrows and create awareness on the need for protecting the birds.

The release said that the students of the Dr. GRD School of IT and Science were working with GeoGreen Computing Lab on environmental issues. The day’s event started with Principal T. Santha and Director G. Radhamani offering food and water to sparrows.

Karpagam College of Engineering recently conducted the ‘Third National Conference on Emerging Trends in Electronics, Instrumentation, Automation and Control’.

A release said that M. Gowrisankar, Vice Principal, urged the students to improve their knowledge, be more innovative and pick up entrepreneurial skills. S. Manoharan, HOD, Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, welcomed the gathering. M. Suresh, Chief Research Engineering, Fluid Control Research Institute, Palakkad, spoke on various instrumentation methodologies and the current industrial scenario.

Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women recently conducted the Dr. Rajammal P. Devadas Annual oration and Twelfth Memorial Day.

A release said that U.K. Lakshmi, Dean, Faculty of Home Science, welcomed the gathering.

C. Palanivelu, Chairman, GEM Hospital and Research Centre, who was the main speaker, spoke on the occasion on ‘Lifestyle and Health Concerns’.

He touched upon major causes of lifestyle disorders, changes in dietary patterns, obesity, hypertension and also cardiovascular diseases.
