Officials of Regional Transport Office conducted surprise checks on school and college buses and vans on Thursday morning to detect overcrowding.

Cases booked

In the operation led by Motor Vehicle Inspector Ramalingam, the RTO team booked cases against 16 vehicle owners. The institutions have, by and large, complied with the safety norms, but private vans continued to transport more than the permitted number of students, Mr. Ramalingam said.

Driving licence

The RTO team verified driving licence and insurance documents of nearly 45 vans and over 25 buses. The working condition of the emergency exit was determined by the team. Cases were also booked against two-wheeler riders for speaking on mobile phones while on the move. In one instance, a mini bus driver was booked for operating on an unauthorised route, Mr. Ramalingam said.
