With the number of pilgrims to the Eachanari temple on the rise and plans to widen the road near the temple, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will look at different options so that there is adequate space in front of the temple for use by the pilgrims.
One of the suggestions given is to construct a flyover in that area, said an official of NHAI.
Works to widen 28-km of Coimbatore - Pollachi road started in December 2016 and will be completed in two years.
The plan is to widen the existing road into a four-lane one, have service roads in some places, construct a bridge across the railway crossing at one location and have elevated corridors at two places.
The total project is estimated to be ₹ 500 crore and the agreement value is ₹ 415 crore. The project also involves removal of encroachments and acquiring land in some places.
Works will be taken up in phases, the official said.
The original proposal is to widen the road in front of the Eachanari temple into a four-lane one.
Considering the growing number of pilgrims to the temple, it was suggested that, instead, a flyover could be constructed so that the existing road is not affected. The NHAI will explore this option too, the official said.
Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan inspected the site on Fridayand asked the NHAI officials to explore two or three options.
