Members of the Malsar tribe community from Manakadavu, near Pollachi, on Monday urged the district administration to restore access to their traditional burial ground. In their petition, submitted at the weekly grievances redress meeting on Monday, the petitioners said their traditional burial ground was in Athu Pollachi village, on a government land.

The community people had been using the burial ground for generations and their practise was that no matter where a community member died, he or she was taken only to that place for burial.

But now, owners of the land near the burial ground had denied them access to the ground by fencing their plots.

The owners had also joined hands with Revenue Department officials on the ground to prevent them from raising the issue. The administration should therefore help them and restore their right – access to the burial ground, the petitioners demanded.

Students petition against headmaster

The students of the Government Higher Secondary School, Vellalore, who had given Class X examination, on Monday sought the district administration’s intervention in sorting out the difference of opinion between them and the school headmaster.

The students said around 25 of them who were to join Plus One in the school had asked the headmaster to establish the ‘third group’ offering commerce, accounts, economics and other subjects.

The headmaster was, however, adamant on starting only the ‘first group' offering mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and other subjects. The headmaster also told them that if they were to raise the issue with higher officials, he would take them to task and even dismiss them from school by issuing transfer certificate, the students claimed.

‘Stop sale of narcotics’

Residents of Mullai Nagar, Kavundampalayam, on Monday urged the district administration to stop the sale of narcotics in the area. In their petition, the residents said they were troubled because of the sale of ganja below a tamarind tree near a LPG cylinder warehouse in the area. Ganja peddlers and their customers park their vehicles at the place and create nuisance, the petition said.
