Over 500 residents of Suriyampalayam Town Panchayat blocked traffic at four places at Chithode on Monday for about five hours demanding adequate supply of drinking water.
People from Samathuvapuram, Lakshmipuram, Rayapalayam Puthur and a few other residential colonies in the town panchayat gathered at Chithode. They blocked the traffic in front of the Aavin milk booth, Government higher secondary school, Four Corners and Rayapalayam urging the town panchayat to ensure uniform supply of water to all the residential areas.
They claimed that many parts in the town panchayat were being given water supply once in ten days.
A few parts were given water supply twice a month. Residents had taken this problem to the notice of the officials in the administration on several occasions. But no concrete efforts had been taken up so far to provide adequate supply of water to the residential colonies.
The police rushed to the spot and pacified the agitators.
Officials from the town panchayat promised that steps would be taken up to sort out the problems in the drinking water supply network. The police diverted traffic through other routes.
