A member of the Kondayampalayam Panchayat on Monday petitioned District Collector M. Karunagaran seeking action against those who rear pigs in an unhygienic manner in the area.
In his petition, G. Narayanasamy (Ward 1) informed the Collector that a few families reared pigs in the area on both sides of the Kotaipalayam-Veliamadai Road, causing inconvenience to road users.
After dusk, in the absence of street lights, motorists hit pigs, which criss-cross the road, and end up having severe injuries.
In the recent past there have been more than 25 accidents and one of the motorists is in comatose at a hospital. In addition to the frequent accidents, those who rear pigs let out the animal out of sties and they enter houses much to the discomfiture of the residents.
Pigs could be seen roaming around the area, in houses. In this unhygienic atmosphere, the leak in the drinking water pipeline that runs close to the sties has troubled residents.
They fear that using the water might bring sickness.
R. Velmurugan, Health Inspector, S.S. Kulam Primary Health Centre, told The Hindu that efforts to ask the families to confine the pigs to the sties had failed as they were uncooperative.
Mr. Narayanasamy has asked the Collector to ensure that hygiene in the area is not compromised.
