The Social Awareness Movement has urged the district administration to remove the encroachments on Naickenkuttai tank in Kalapatti village, and on Payirvalanthankuttai tank in Vellanaipatti village.

Action should be taken against officials who had failed to act against encroachers.

In the petition submitted at the weekly grievances redress day meeting on Monday, the organisation said that a real estate company had bought land close to the two water bodies.

The company had registered the encroached land in their name using forged documents.

And, then it had approached the authorities concerned for layout approval.

For encroachments on one of the tanks, the company managed to secure approval but for the other it could not. Regarding the approval granted, the organisation had lodged complaints with tahsildars and senior Revenue Department officials but nothing had come of those complaints.

For replies sought through queries under the Right to Information Act on the action taken on its complaints, the officials had not responded.

Cattle transport

The Tamilaga Dalit Munnetra Kazhagam on Monday asked the district administration to take steps to stop the illegal transport of cattle to neighbouring states for slaughter.

In a petition, the kazhagam said that with the connivance of a few policemen, those in the cattle trade loaded more than the permitted number of calves, cows, and goat to ferry them for slaughter in Kerala and Karnataka.

The police should stop the illegal transport, irrespective of who was behind the trade and what his or her political affiliation was.

The police should form special teams to stop such illegal transport and support those non-government organisations and volunteers who tried to prevent such illegal transport and help.

The kazhagam wanted various animal lovers’ organisations to join it in its efforts to stop illegal transport.

Polluting units

Residents of Mohan Nagar, near the SIDCO industrial estate, on Monday sought action against industrial units in the are that were causing noise and air pollution.

K. Sasikumar, a resident, said that they were forced to keep their doors and windows closed, and live in an unhealthy environment.

They had approached the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, which after a study said that the noise levels were almost twice the permitted limit and the air too was polluted.

The board had served notices on these units to move out within three months in September 2013.

As the units have not done so, the board asked the corporation to act against them. The units were continuing to run with impunity.

Temple

The Hindu Munnani on Monday asked the district administration to explore ways and means to construct the Gandhipuram flyover without removing the Siddhi Vinayagar Temple.

In a petition, the organisation said that devout Hindus would get hurt if the administration were to shift out the temple, which had been there for several decades.

They cited a 1993 Bill on religious establishments to underscore their point.

Statue

In contrast, the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam had said that it was ready to shift the Periyar statue at Gandhipuram to facilitate the flyover construction, provided the Coimbatore Corporation provided an alternative site.

In a release, the party’s general secretary Ku. Ramakrishnan had said that the flyover had been a long-pending demand of the people who were eager to see its early completion.
