Heavy rain that lashed the city and its suburbs on Monday night threw life out of gear in many parts on Tuesday.
Though the city eagerly awaited summer showers, the downpour exposed the infrastructure lacunae in many areas with flooding of roads and inundation of residential colonies.
The total rainfall recorded in the district was 619.80 mm and the average rainfall stood at 51.65 mm. Periyanickenpalayam recorded the highest of 110 mm.
In Pappanaickenpudur, residents of Jeeva Nagar on Marudhamalai Road were put to hardship after rainwater entered their area. Choking of a waterway under a low-level bridge on the road due to accumulation of garbage resulted in the flooding of Jeeva Nagar.
The flooding affected 120 people in the 56 houses in the area. The Fire and Rescue Services personnel along with the police rescued 31 persons.
Similarly, rainwater entered Ganesh Nagar at Ashokapuram in Thudialur resulting in the rescue of 150 persons from 50 houses. Dampness caused by rain and waterlogging resulted in the collapse of three houses in the area. The residents went to the railway track on an elevated stretch till the local body and officials could rush rescue and relief to them.
While a nearly 100-year-old tree was uprooted, the rain also resulted in disruption in power supply keeping the Tangedco officials on their toes.
In the city, waterlogging was reported at the junctions in Lakshmi Mills, Singanallur, Ramanathapuram and at over a dozen places because of blockage with garbage of open drains.
Traffic on Nanjundapuram Road was paralysed for over three hours on Tuesday morning due to water- logging on a stretch of nearly a kilometre with the UGD works occupying one side of the road and inundation on the other side. Highways and Corporation officials made arrangements to drain the rainwater and restored traffic flow.
Efforts had been made to clear the open drains and increase the road height, the officials said.
