Rain lashes Coimbatore district

A downpour for a few hours on Wednesday evening lashed Coimbatore district.

The rain resulted in traffic getting paralysed and inundation of roads and flyovers. Some of the areas along Sanganur canal witnessed water logging. The heavy rain kept the TNEB staff on their toes in attending to breakdown in power supply till early morning.

The heavy downpour and the resultant steady inflow into the reservoirs were said to be increasing the storage steadily. Owing to a steady inflow, Aliyar reservoir with a storage capacity of 120 ft had started overflowing through the sluices.

The rainfall in mm at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday is as follows; Tamil Nadu Agriculture University 46.40, Pollachi 45, Airport 36.40, Coimbatore South 31, Chincona 16, Mettuppalayam 7, Valparai PAP 7, Valparai Taluk 6, Chinna Kallar 2, Sholayar 18, Thondamuthur 8.3, Siruvani 3 and foot hills 1.

The rainfall was minimum at Periyanaickenpalayam, Annur and Sulur reports reaching Coimbatore said.

As a matter of precaution as the sky continued to remain overcast and mild showers during the day, the district administration has asked the departments to remain in a state of readiness.

The Highways, Electricity Board, Revenue, Police, Fire and Rescue Services personnel have been asked to remain alert to meet any contingency in the wake of the heavy downpour continuing on Friday night as well.
