Muslim organisations staged demonstrations at various places in the district and in the city on Thursday demanding the re-construction of Babri Masjid at Ayodhya while Hindu associations defied the denial of permission and attempted to stage protests seeking the construction of Ram temple.

Tamilaga Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam activists staged a demonstration in Gandhipuram pressing for action against kar sevaks and re-construction of the mosque while members of the Towheeth Jama-ath staged a demonstration in front of Red Cross Society building on Huzur Road pressing for similar demands. However, the day passed off peacefully with tightened vigil by the police across the city.

Members of various Hindu outfits such as Hindu Munnani, Bharat Sena, Shiv Sena and Hindu Makkal Katchi – Vivekanandar Narpani Mandram resorted to various forms of protests. While a section of the activists offered prayers at a temple for construction of Ram temple, another group conducted a gate meeting in front of another temple and were removed by the police.

Another group of activists attempted to stage a demonstration in Gandhipuram and were removed by the police along with another group that attempted to picket the airport.

Around 500 people belonging to Hindu Munnani and Indiya Tauheed Jamath were arrested for staging separate agitations in the city on Thursday.

The Indiya Tauheed Jamath members were arrested when they besieged the Head Post Office to highlight their demands pertaining to the Babri Masjid issue.

The outfit’s district president I. Hyder Ali said all those responsible for the demolition of the Babri Masjid, including the political leaders who were accused of criminal conspiracy, should be punished without any further delay.

The Hindu Munnani men, while courting arrest for staging a demonstration near the Corporation office without permission, demanded that a legislation need to be passed to ensure construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya.

Condemned

Hindu Munnani’s district general secretary Senthil Kumar condemned the police for denying permission to the Munnani men to hold demonstration but at the sametime giving permission to a Muslim outfit to stage a similar agitation.

The Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam members staged a demonstration near the railway station with a demand that judgment in all the cases pending before the court on the Babri Masjid issue should be expeditiously pronounced. They said that the government machinery should ensure that no place of worship should be demolished anymore.
