This week the Coimbatore Corporation will take the first step towards establishing a new, integrated bus stand in Gandhipuram. It has asked an agency concerned to prepare a project report for establishing the bus stand.
The Corporation had proposed a new, integrated bus stand in Gandhipuram by taking over a portion of the Coimbatore Central Prison grounds, which is now under the Home Department’s control. The Corporation planned to integrate the three bus stands in Gandhipuram and build a new one with modern amenities.
According to sources, the Corporation has planned to spend around Rs. 50 crore to Rs. 60 crore for the bus stand.
Along with the bus stand the Corporation has also quicken the pace of constructing a new Council Hall, tomato market in Sundarapuram, and wholesale vegetable market in Kavundampalayam. As for the Council Hall, the Corporation wanted to build a new one to accommodate Councillors, officers and also the press in a spacious hall after the present one became too congested to accommodate the aforementioned people after the civic body expanded in area to have 28 more councillors. The present strength is 100.
The civic body has allocated Rs. 4 crore for the purpose.
For the tomato market the civic body has allotted Rs. 3 crore and for the wholesale vegetable market Rs. 3 crore.
Once the revised draft is ready, the Corporation will float tenders to take up the projects at the earliest. The new Council under Mayor S.M. Velusamy announced the aforementioned projects in the 2012-13 Budget and during the course of the current financial year.
The sources say the priority is to execute the projects at the earliest so that the civic body will be able to take up new projects that will find a mention in the coming Budget.
The sources suggested that the new budget will focus on the development of girl students in Corporation schools and basic amenities. These will be projects that the civic body will implement within the shortest possible time.
