Heavy rain across the district during the last few days have reduced the demand, according to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco).
Chief Engineer of Tangedco A. Thangavelu said that the use of air-conditioners had reduced with the rain. Consumption of power by the agriculture sector would fall if the rain continued.
This would have an impact on demand.
Apart from reducing demand, there have been instances of feeder breakdowns.
These have been set right immediately. There was no load shedding in the district on Sunday. The Tangedco is also taking precautionary measures for the monsoon by keeping stock of materials and vehicles ready for any emergency requirement. The Tangedco personnel are also conducting pre-monsoon inspection of 230 kV and 110 kV lines, he said.
An official of the Southern India Mills’ Association said that consumption of power by textile mills for humidification plants had come down because of the rain.
The industries do not expect problem in power availability till the end of next month.
D. Balasundaram, president of Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers’ Association, said that demand of power by industries was less than the usual till Deepavali as the focus would be on bonus disbursements. The association welcomed the proposed amendments to the Electricity Act, 2003. The stakeholders would submit their reactions to the amendments.
The amendments proposed curtailing some of the powers given to the State Government and promoting a new class of licensees — supply licensees, he said.
