Pollachi – Palani train service to begin

January 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - COIMBATORE:

The stage is set for the much awaited train service from Pollachi to Palani.

After the railway officials gave the green signal on safety aspects, the railway station is now getting a facelift.

The Palani to Pollachi metre gauge to broad gauge conversion is part of the major project that was announced in 2007 for gauge conversion of the track on Dindigul- Palani- Pollachi - Palakkad and Pollachi- Podanaur section. The work commenced only in 2009 due tofund constraints. Metre gauge train connectivity to the Pollachi station was stopped the same year.

The work on the Dindigul to Palani section was completed and trains started to run from November 2012. On completion of the gauge conversion, four trials were conducted on the 63-km long Palani to Pollachi section from October 2014. The engines with and without bogies had a trial run at a speed of 75, 100 and 120 kms per hour to test the stability of the track.

Meanwhile, Madurai Division of Southern Railways has announced three special trains including a super fast train for Pongal on the Pollachi to Palani section.

The super fast train (train No. 02651) will start from Palani at 7.45 a.m. and will reach Pollachi at 9.10 a.m. The train will stop only at Udumalpet. In the evening the super fast train (train No. 02652) will start from Pollachi at 4.45 p.m. and will reach Palani at 6.10 p.m. Advance bookings for these trains would begin soon.
