Policeman suspended for being drunk on duty

A police head constable Rathnavelu (50), who was on picket duty at Selvapuram Kallamedu, was on Monday arrested after having been found drunk while on duty. He has also been placed under suspension.

He was arrested under section 4 (1) (j) of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act and was let on station bail.

Investors throng SP office

More than 90 investors and their relatives on Monday thronged the office of the Superintendent of Police – Coimbatore Rural District seeking action against a firm promoted by Peelamedu-based entrepreneurs on charges of defrauding them of their money.

It was alleged that an online marketing firm promised lucrative return on investments which included Rs 8,500 per month for a deposit of Rs. 1 lakh and return of the capital with bonus on completion of five years.

Some of the investors complained that for the last four months the firm had failed to give them the return on investments. There were complaints from Erode, Tirupur and Coimbatore. Police said that their complaints would be inquired by the Crime Branch and would be forwarded to the investigating agency concerned for further action.

Passenger robbed of cash

A passenger who travelled by a Omni bus from Chennai to Coimbatore was robbed of Rs. 68,000 on Monday.

According to police, Rajiv Sai, a manager in a pharmaceutical firm, said that when he was removing his luggage from the overhead luggage cabin he found one of the baggage found opened..

According to the manager, he boarded the bus on Sunday night from Chennai and kept two of his bags in the overhead cabin. One of the bags had Rs. 75,000 and the other had Rs 68,000. The bag which contained Rs. 68,000 was found open.He said that the bus stopped only once mid-way wherein one more passenger boarded the bus.

The bus was brought to Race Course police station and was checked. But only Rs. 3, 500 was found lying inside the bus and even that belonged to another passenger. Investigations are on to ascertain how the Rs. 68,000 went missing.

Man arrested

Police on Sunday arrested Sivakumar (26), an engineering college drop, out on charges of taking away a bus from Pollachi bus stand in a bid to sell it in Kerala.According to police, a bus belonging to Shyamala Rani of Namakkal and on lease for five years with Hyder Ali of Pollachi was parked near the bus stand. The bus driver Uma Shankar (37) had left the bus with the keys in it and had gone to the tea shop.

On his return, he found the bus missing. Following information, police alerted all their counter parts for a vehicle check and the bus was found parked on the Anamalai - Udumalpet Road. Police arrested the man who took away the bus. Investigations are on.

Commotion at CMCH

Commotion prevailed at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday when a woman got into heated exchanges with the doctors for defective surgery for her son’s urinary tract infection.

According to police, Muruganandavalli (35), a plantation worker, had admitted her son Anish Kumar (13) for urinary tract infection. The boy was operated last week and was sent back to Valparai. On Monday, the woman returned and fought for admitting her son and performing a corrective surgery, as the boy had developed complications post surgery. Police and hospital authorities pacified the agitated woman and got the boy admitted again.

House burgled

Burglars broke into the house of Sivasubramanian (52) employed with the Survey Department of the Government of India and decamped with 17 sovereigns of jewellery. It was learnt that Sivasubramanian had gone to Chennai with his family when the incident took place. The front door of the house at Lakshmi Nagar in Kavundampalayam area was found open. Based on a complaint from the victim’s mother Lakshmi (72), Thudialur police have registered a case and investigations are on.
