The Nilgiris North Forest division has come up with the innovative idea of lining artificial water troughs with plastic sheets, so that water does not seep into the cement linings of the troughs.

Drought

The measure devised by S. Kalanidhi, District Forest Officer, Nilgiris North Division, along with other forest staff, has been implemented in various ranges in the Nilgiris North division, to tackle severe drought conditions. The measure will minimise water wastage and will ensure availability of water for a longer period of time.

In Thengumarada section, two such tanks have been filled with water for animals. The forest staff have begun using an abandoned old motor to pump water to a water trough, which has become a major lifeline for animals such as tigers, leopards and sloth bears. V. Selvam, Forest Range Officer (Kil Kotagiri), said that such efforts have ensured that animals have a ready source of water along with green fodder in the Thengumarada Section, which has become extremely dry due to lack of rain.
