Pirated digital versatile discs seized; six held

Coimbatore city and rural police seized pirated video compact discs (VCDs) and digital versatile discs (DVDs) and arrested a total of six persons including a woman.

City Police Commissioner Amaresh Pujari constituted a special team led by Sub-Inspector S. Rajkumar who along with local police raided a house in Gopal Naidu Street in Peelamedu.

The teams found pirated new film CDs, empty film covers and empty CDs totalling 20,000. The teams also recovered four CD writers with high capacity to write more CDs at the same time.

Arrested

The recovered items proved that the premises was being used as a small unit for producing more CDs. The teams arrested K. Moorthy alias Krishnamoorthy (52) of the same area and S. Karthikeyan of Peelamedu. Peelamedu police registered a case against them and both were arrested and remanded.

Mr.Amaresh Pujari appreciated the special teams and said that the drive against piracy will be stepped up and warned of stringent action against those indulging in piracy. In three other incidents on Tuesday, the police arrested three persons on charges of possessing pirated DVDs. During a check on Cross Cut Road, Kattoor police found Mumtaj (36) of Gandhipuram in possession of 128 Tamil new film DVDs and arrested her.

Saravanampatty police raided a musical shop at Ganapathy and found 21 Tamil new DVDs. Police arrested C. Shanmugam (26) of Kondayampalayam. Rathinapuri police arrested A. Syeduppa (31) of Karumbukadai and found him in possession of 118 Tamil new film DVDs. Police arrested Syeduppa and seized a motorcycle.

In Coimbatore rural police district, the Kinathukadavu police arrested A. Jaffer Sadiq (21) of Pollachi and found him in possession of 150 pirated DVDs. All have been remanded under the provisions of Copy Rights Act.
