Jewellery weighing 53 sovereigns were stolen at a wedding hall in Kavundampalayam on Wednesday morning. According to the Thudiyalur Police, the family of Rani, cousin of bridegroom B. Ramkumar, had kept necklace, bangles, earrings, chains, and other items in a suitcase in a room on the first floor of the wedding hall.
After the muhurtham and food, when they returned to the room, they found the lock broken open. And when they went inside they found the suitcases damaged and the jewellery missing, the police said and added that those behind the crime had, however, not touched the imitation jewellery.
Rani, her husband Balachandran and daughter Sandhya had arrived from Chennai to attend the wedding. A case has been registered.
Mettupalayam police have arrested Durairaj, 45, of Kumarapuram on charges of assaulting his neighbour’s family. The police said that following a dispute in using the bathroom, Durairaj had, after an altercation, assaulted Gopal, his wife Rajitha and daughter Manjula with a sickle. The three sustained severe injures and were rushed by neighbours to the Mettupalayam Government Hospital. Based on a complaint from Gopal, the police registered a case and arrested Durairaj.
City Crime Branch Police on Wednesday arrested Manivannan on charges of duping the owners of spinning mills in Aruppukottai. The police said that they had served the arrest warrant at the Coimbatore Prison as Manivannan was in the prison following his arrest in another case. The police said that the complaint from Aruppukottai was that he had faulted in paying Rs. 58 lakh to the mill owners, who had supplied him goods worth over Rs. 1 crore.
He had paid a portion of the amount but failed to pay the balance. The police said they would inform the magistrate court in Virudhunagar of his arrest and thereafter produce him before the magistrate there.
