K. Sakthivel (46) working at a fair price shop of the Singanallur Cooperative Society attempted suicide at the shop on Monday.
Police said that he consumed 16 sleeping tablets and was rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital by colleagues.
According to the police, preliminary inquiry revealed that the man had left a note in his pocket accusing a senior All India Anna Dravida Munetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) functionary of Singanallur as the reason behind his taking the extreme step.
Sakthivel was working at the fair price shop at Sukrawarpet run by the Singanallur Cooperative Society and was recently transferred to the outlet at Singanallur which upset him, police said. He was also frustrated as he did not get salary for the past three months.
No case was registered till the late hours on Monday as Sakthivel was in the intensive care unit.
Meanwhile, PDS outlet employees staged a demonstration near the south taluk office on Monday seeking action against the officials responsible for the suicides of PDS workers.
The protestors said that pressure from the officials and persons running the societies as the reason for PDS workers taking the extreme step.
