‘No contradiction in CPI(M) stand on Mullaiperiyar’

April 30, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - COIMBATORE:

There was no contradiction in the Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M) stand on the Mullaiperiyar issue. The party in Tamil Nadu will continue to champion the cause of people here, said party leader and Rajya Sabha MP T.K. Rangarajan here on Friday.

Responding to a question at a press meet, he said that the party was very clear – that it would put the Tamil Nadu’s interest in the forefront. The party in Kerala saying that it would protect the interest of people there was not a contradiction.

It should not been seen that way. It was an issue to be discussed between the two State governments, he said and added that the Centre too should intervene to bring about an amicable solution.

Mr. Rangarajan accused both the Dravidian parties – the AIADMK and DMK – of not being serious about prohibition.

The parties’ leaders were the ones running distilleries and breweries. If they were so serious let them start by cutting production. It would have a cascading effect. Were they ready to do it?

If voted to power, the People’s Welfare Alliance would work to protect the interest of small and medium enterprises and improve the quality of education. Only 200 Tamil Nadu students had cleared the IIT entrance examination whereas it was 2,000 from Rajasthan, he pointed out.

Responding to a question on the party’s role post-election, he said that whether to be a part of the next government or what role to play, the party would take a decision at the appropriate time.
