Sleuths from Video Piracy Cell along with Enforcers of Intellectual Property Rights (EIPR), an anti-piracy firm that started operations in November 1999, arrested nine persons during a raid conducted at shops in Gandhipuram here on Wednesday for selling fake mobile phones.

According to the police, the raid was conducted based on a complaint by lodged by EIPR stating that fake Samsung mobile phones were being sold in the city.

A team led by Inspector, Video Piracy Cell, S. Shanmugaiah, conducted the raid in nine shops and seized the products worth more than Rs. 70 lakh.

Those arrested have been identified as M. Mehaboob Khan, 32, A. Ahamed Akram, 28, M. Lakshman Singh, 23, S. Uttam, 30, B. Kesavaram, 32, K. Ganesh, 28, B. Hari Singh, 32, G. Kalpath Singh, 21, and R. Prakash, 33. Section 5 read with 65 of the Indian Copy Rights Act had been invoked. All the arrested were remanded in custody.
