Nature enthusiasts on Tuesday objected to the cutting of trees on Dr. Balasundaram Road by the officials and stopped the exercise midway.
Following information about attempts to cut trees, nature enthusiasts led by N.I. Jalaludeen of Nature Conservation Society (NCS) visited the spot.
While the trucks used for removing the trees felled had the name board of the Corporation, the workers involved said that they were pruning the trees as part of the pre-monsoon inspection by Tangedco to remove branches that touched the overhead wires.
Instead of cutting the branches, the workers were actually cutting half of the trees by axing them midway a little above the roots.
Such a pruning was just not required. The personnel were not using proper tools for the cutting exercise and were using axes and the manner in which the pruning was done will definitely kill the tree.
On seeing the resistance from the nature enthusiasts, the workers abandoned the drive halfway and left the place. Nature enthusiasts are planning to represent to the Tangedco and the Corporation.
