The State Government has floated tender to prepare a feasibility report and detailed project report for metro rail project here, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami said on Sunday.

Addressing the gathering at the MGR centenary celebration at the VOC Park ground here, he said that on December 1, the Government had floated a tender inviting consultants to bid for preparing the reports.

The State Government was taking up the Pilloor III drinking water project and would soon initiate talks with the Kerala Government to dredge the Siruvani Reservoir to increase the storage capacity.

The reservoir in Kerala is a source of drinking water for the Coimbatore city.

The Chief Minister said the Government would take up in the next GST Council Meeting the demands of the small and micro enterprises, who had sought tax relief. (The Coimbatore and Tirupur District Micro and Cottage Entrepreneurs’ Association members met the Chief Minister and sought the State Government support to get complete exemption from GST for units with less than ₹20 lakh turnover).

It would also work to acquire the land required for expanding the Coimbatore airport.

It was working on building an elevated corridor on Avinashi Road, constructing a western by-pass for the city, improving drinking water supply in the Coimbatore Corporation’s added areas and providing underground and storm water drainages with Central Government assistance.

The State Government would also support the Coimbatore Corporation for shifting the vegetable market on Mettupalayam Road, and constructing a subway at NSR Road junction on Mettupalayam Road.

A study would be conducted to include parts of Karamadai and Periyanaickenpalayam that were excluded in the Athikadavu-Avinashi project.

MGR flyover

Mr. Palaniswami then named the newly-constructed Gandhipuram flyover as MGR flyover and added that the second tier of the project would be completed by next year. He also announced the formation of a new taluk headquartered in Anamalai.

In deference to a demand made by Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly, V. Jayaraman, he said that the Government would constitute a technical committee to study the linking of Anamalaiyar and Nallaru, a 27-year-old dream.

The Chief Minister later gave away welfare assistance worth ₹118.33 crore to 36,650 persons.

Responding to a video clipping doing the rounds in social media showing him distributing money, Sulur MLA R. Kanagaraj said he had taken 60 buses full of people to the MGR centenary celebration. He had paid for fuel for the vehicles, food and water packets for those who travelled to the venue.

He also said it was impossible to take people to such events without arranging vehicles and providing food and water and wanted to know if any other political party had other means of taking people to their functions.
