Medical college distances itself from accident

August 08, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:05 am IST - Coimbatore:

Hours after the parasailer fell to death here on Sunday, the Coimbatore Medical College distanced itself from the sport.

The college Dean A. Edwin Joe told The Hindu that the institution’s association with the club had ended on Friday itself.

“Due to heavy winds (on that day), even experienced pilots could not fly at the college premises (at Peelamedu),” he said, adding that Sunday’s event was independently organised by the club.

Incidentally, on Friday, Additional Director General of Police, Coast Security Group, C. Sylendra Babu had geared up for parasailing at the Coimbatore Medical College ground. But he could not fly due to unfavourable winds, though 11 of them had glided by then. Onlookers complained the organisers had failed to station an ambulance at the spot.

Assistant Commissioner of Police K. Sundarraj said a case would be registered against the organisers of the event under Section 304(A) (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

‘Stray incident’

A person who was involved in organising the event said the club had organised more than 60 such parasailing events across the State over the last five years. This included five in Coimbatore and two of them at the CODISSIA Grounds.
