Coimbatore Corporation officials on Sunday raided illegal meat shops in the city, removed them and also seized rotten meat products from other shops.

According to sources, following instructions from Mayor S.M. Velusamy and Commissioner G. Latha, the officials conducted raids in Ward 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 24, 72 and 85 covering Vadavalli, Thadagam Road, Marudhamalai Road, Thondamuthur Road and neighbouring areas.

The officials removed thatched sheds, took away chairs, tables, butcher’s knives, and other equipment from the makeshift unauthorised shops. They also seized 50 kg fish, 70 kg chicken, 15 kg meat and 25 kg pork.

The civic body officials said that some of the seized stuff was rotten as well. Corporation officials had issued notices to the shop owners for not following hygiene norms.
