Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has threatened to launch an agitation at the inter-State border near here if the administration failed to initiate steps to prevent the movement of waste from Kerala.
In a release, the party’s State Youth Wing Secretary V. Eswaran had said that on Saturday last, the residents of Kanjikode, Kerala, blocked and handed over to police a lorry carrying waste. Media reports quoting the lorry driver said that the vehicle was on its way to Tamil Nadu, where the waste was to be recycled. The driver had apparently said he had been carrying waste to Tamil Nadu for the past several years and also showed receipts authorising transportation of waste.
In a similar situation last year, the party had blocked lorries carrying fake receipts and waste that included medical waste. It had also shown the receipts to the senior revenue and police officials to back its claim. Both promised action but since there had been no stringent action. The party wanted the officials to instruct people manning the check post to prevent the entry of waste into the State. If the officials failed to act, the party would launch an agitation as it had done last year.
