Mass yoga sessions and various events marked observance of International Day of Yoga in Coimbatore on Wednesday.

At Western Ghats International School, Yoga day celebrations were coordinated by Health and Hygiene Club under the leadership of Correspondent Hemalatha Sashikumar. Students performed yoga as V. Nanammal, 98-year-old Yoga exponent from Coimbatore, demonstrated several asanas. Her son Balakrishnan explained the significance of every asana. Ms Nanammal was presented Pride of Coimbatore award for her contribution in spreading yoga at the event.

The Yoga Day celebrations at Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women (University) was launched by N.A. Perumal, Director General, Vision for Wisdom, Aaliyar. Chancellor of the university P.R. Krishnakumar stressed the importance of yoga. NSS volunteers, NCC cadets and sports students demonstrated various asanas at the event.

Competitions such as essay writing, slogan writing, poster designing were conducted for teaching and non teaching staff on the theme ‘Yoga for healthy and happy life’. The mass yoga orientation conducted in the campus was attended by more than 900 students of Avinashilingam Primary School, Higher Secondary School and university.

Satchidananda Jothi Nikethan International School, Kallar near Mettupalayam, organised a mass yoga for the students with focus on Hatha Yoga. Students and teachers performed yoga amidst natural ambience at the school premises. Secretary of the school Kavidasan inaugurated the event.

Ortho One Orthopedic Specialty Centre conducted a session for its staff to showcase the benefits of yoga for flexible, strong bones and muscles. Speaking at the event, David Rajan, founder, Ortho One, said that yoga is a recommended treatment option for several orthopaedic problems. Also, yoga can help reduce stress levels and protect bones from degenerating as stress hormones known as cortisols affect bone health.

At NGM College Pollachi, around 2,000 students from 30 schools took part in the Yoga Day celebrations inaugurated by B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, president of the institution.

Students as well as elders took part in yoga sessions conducted by Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya at PSG Sarvajana Higher Secondary School and Sathayanarayana Hall, Gandhipuram.

Mass yoga sessions were also organised by PSG college of Arts and Science, SBOA Matric and Higher Secondary School, North Coimbatore Manavalakalai Mandram,

The Institute of Cost Accountants of India, Sri Jayendra Saraswathy Maha Vidhyalaya College of Arts and Science, World Social Services Association Coimbatore Cognitive Council Trust, World Social Services Association Coimbatore Cognitive Council Trust, Coimbatore Builders and Contractors Association and PPG Institute of Technology, Kumaraguru College of technology, Sree Narayana Guru College, Angappa College of Arts and Science, and Sree Narayana Guru Polytechnic College.

TIRUPUR: Around 2,000 school students and 500 people from various walks of life attended the Yoga Day celebrations organised by World Community Service Centre (Tirupur Zone) at Jaiva Bhai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School here on Wednesday.

The participants, who included Coir Board chairman and former BJP MP C.P. Radhakrishnan, prominent industrialists, students, and teachers, among others, performed 10 poses (asanas) as instructed by the experts.

S. Senthilkumaran, spokesperson of World Community Service Centre, said students from as many as 40 schools participated.

This part, the Yoga Day was celebrated through events held at NIFT-TEA College of Knitwear Fashion, Chikkanna Government Arts College, Sainik School, Amaravathinagar, and various colleges as well as schools across the district.

UDHAGAMANDALAM: The Wellington Cantonment Board celebrated the Third International Yoga Day on Wednesday at the Wellington Stadium by introducing “Laughter and Dance Yoga” to the people of the Nilgiris for the first time.

“This year, the chief guest Mukesh Kumar, a trained professional Laughter Therapist practising this form of yoga for the past 13 years, has taught this art to thousands of people all over the country,” a press release from the Wellington Cantonment Board read. More than150 children were involved in the yoga demonstration of 40 minutes.

Later, Mr. Kumar took the stage to demonstrate and teach Laughter and Dance Yoga to a gathering of 800 people, which included Cantonment Board staff, school children, parents and the public.

An exhibition on “Natural food” was inaugurated as well, with different varieties of healthy natural foods and their benefits being highlighted in the exhibition.

“Wellington Cantonment Board had also decided to club the Yoga Day celebrations with Swachh Bharat theme. It was decided to conduct the entire programme completely plastic-free.

There was not a single plastic material used, including water bottles, for the entire duration of the program,” a release added.
