The annual Kovai Marathon of the Kovai Medical Center and Hospital, which has been organising the event since 1992 to create awareness about various health issues, was taken out on Sunday.
The theme of this year’s marathon was ‘donate organs, save lives’.
The marathon was intended to create awareness about the need for organ donation, an area in which Tamil Nadu was at the forefront.
Around 3,000 doctors and staff of KMCH, students of KMCH para-medical college and Dr. N.G.P. institutions, Rotarians and Kongunadu Arts and Science College took part in the marathon.
Further, Dr. N.G.P. school children in the age group of nine to 13 years also took part in a mini-marathon spanning 6.5 km.
Mayor P. Rajkumar flagged off the marathon.
Nalla G. Palaniswami, Chairman of KMCH, Kasi Goundan, Director of KMCH, and V.C. Arukutty, MLA, took part.
The marathon began near the Kongunadu Arts and Science College in Thudiyalur and concluded at KMCH main center, covering a distance of 18.2 km.
The top three winners in various categories were awarded cash prizes of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7,500, and Rs. 5,000 respectively.
