A 40-year-old man died after soil caved in while he was working at a construction site in Udhagamandalam on Tuesday. The police have identified the deceased as Durai, 40, a resident of Kadanad in Udhagamandalam.

He was working at a construction site near to the Sacred Heart Church.

Rain

The police said that due to rain, the soil at the site had become loose and susceptible to collapsing under its own weight.

Durai had reportedly tried to fetch some tools from nearby when the soil suddenly collapsed on him.

His fellow workers tried to dig him out in vain.

The fire and rescue services department managed to pull him out. He died soon after being taken to the Government Headquarters Hospital in Udhagamandalam.
