K. Kumar (41), a gold appraiser and businessman from Ramji Nagar in Srirangam, Tiruchy district, petitioned the City Police Commissioner here on Monday urging the police to get back Rs. 5.45 lakh he gave to a three-member gang in exchange of ‘gold bars.’

He claimed that the gang gave him gold coated bars. His relative introduced him to Kalisamy alias Bai of Coimbatore. Kalisamy evinced interest in doing business with him.

Kalisamy reportedly told Kumar that a sizeable quantity of gold was available at a discount of Rs. 300 a gram to the market price. He asked him to get Rs. 5 lakh ready for the deal. On February 28, Kalisamy introduced Kumar to Easwar, Moorthy, and Harshad at a restaurant in Kuniamuthur.

The men showed Kumar gold bars which he wanted to test for quality. He gave them Rs. 1.5 lakh in cheque in the first week of March and Rs. 3.5 lakh in cash later. The gang gave him the gold bars. On testing, it was found that they were gold coated bars.

Kumar sought Kalisamy’s help to get back the money back from them.

Kalisamy demanded Rs. 45,000 from him to mediate and promised to help him get back the money. On Monday, Kumar submitted a recording of the telephonic conversation he had with the accused and produced the gold bars given to him.
