Man arrested on burglary charges

Mettupalayam Police arrested A. Muhammed Ali Jinnah (37), of Mattakara Street on Sirumugai Road in Mettupalayam, on Friday for allegedly breaking into four shops in and around Mettupalayam Town during the late hours of Thursday.

The police said that there were close to 20 cases against him in The Nilgiris, Tirupur, Avinashi, Coonoor and Mettupalayam.

He was released from jail only two months ago. The police said that he stole a gold bracelet weighing about 10 grams from a shop, Rs. 1,200 from a shop opposite Black Thunder Water theme park, Rs. 2,200 from a bakery near the railway gate and Rs. 1,000 from another shop on Ooty Main Road.

Two killed in accident

Two cyclists were killed in separate accidents here on Friday.

In the first accident, S. Palanisamy (61) of Narassimapuram near Kuniamuthur was fatally knocked down by a motorcycle on Coimbatore- Palakkad Main Road at Edayarpalayam. In another incident, R. Sakthivel (63) of Vellalore died on the spot when a car hit him near Vellalore.

Arrested

Race Course Police arrested R. Jayabal (33) of Veerapandi in Theni District on Friday on the charges of torturing his wife.

The police said that his wife Lakshmi, an Armed Reserve Police attached to the city police, in a complaint said that she was harassed by Jayabal, who served the Central Reserve Police and was dismissed from service. He has been lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.

Case registered

Saravanampatty Police registered a case against two persons for allegedly cheating R. Gunasekaran (44) of Maniyakarampalayam to the tune of Rs. 60 lakh over a business deal.

The police said that the victim had an agreement to run a company that belonged to the accused M. Krishnakumar of Ganapathy in the city and K. Kuppusamy of Salem and gave a demand draft for the above amount.

It was learnt that for more than nine months they neither handed over the company nor returned the money to Gunasekaran.

It was learnt that the two also threatened the complainant. The case has been registered based on a direction from the Madras High Court.

The two were booked under sections 467 (forgery of valuable security), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, 506 (i) (threat to life) of the Indian Penal Code.
