Lawyers on Friday formed a human chain stretching from the District Session Court complex to State Bank of India Road, demanding the arrest of five police personnel for the alleged assault on a lawyer at Thudiyalur police station on October 7.
Around 500 lawyers, both men and women, participated in the human chain. They raised slogans and held placards condemning the police for failing to arrest the five personnel and accused them of attempting to protect them.
Commotion
Commotion prevailed outside the Collectorate, when a car was prevented from entering the premises and this led to quarrel between the driver of the car and a few lawyers. Later, they were pacified by other lawyers.
The protestors said that the human chain was formed to draw the attention of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who was in the city for the local body election campaign, to the lawyers' demand for the arrest of the police personnel.
The alleged attack on lawyer Anandeswaran took place when he came to the Thudiyalur station regarding a dispute over vacating a house.
Suspended
Anandeswaran alleged that he was beaten up by Sub-Inspector Renuka Devi, head constables Gopalakrishnan, Chinnaraj, Mohammed Ismail and constable Suji.
A case was registered against them and they were placed under suspension.
The lawyers, after forming the human chain, continued their sit-in protest at the District Police Office (DPO) for the fifth consecutive day. Efforts during the last four days by the top police officials and the district judge, failed to pacify the protestors.
Court boycott
Lawyers affiliated to Tirupur Advocates Association and Tirupur Bar Association also boycotted the court proceedings on Friday demanding the arrest of the five police personnel. Members from both the associations joined the human chain agitation held in Coimbatore.
