Coimbatore Airport is expecting certification from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the recalibrated Instrument Landing System (ILS) in two days.
The certification will obviate delay in flight takeoff and landing, besides diversion and cancellation of flights because of bad weather.
ILS has devices which will enable precision touchdown on the runway along a pre-set glid path as the instruments in the aircraft will pick up signals from the ILS and help pilots at night and in poor visibility owing to downpour and fog.
When the runway was extended from 8,000 feet to 10,000 feet, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had the ILS and the Precision Approach Path Indicator reinstalled to the extended portion of the runway.
The recalibration has been completed and the compliance report has already been submitted to the DGCA for checking the alignment of both the gadgets.
Airport Director K. Peter Abraham told The Hindu on Monday that he hoped to get the certification soon, possibly in 48 hours.
AAI Coimbatore is at present using the entire length of the runway for takeoff but not for landing.
With the ILS on the extended runway, the entire length would be thrown open for landing as well, Mr. Abraham said.
In the absence of ILS flights could not land or take off on time in heavy rain and because of fog.
Sometimes flights had to diverted to Kochi and Bangalore causing inconvenience to passengers.
Even on Monday, a Chennai-Coimbatore flight was diverted to Kochi because of poor visibility in Coimbatore.
