Neighbours of accused in Ramanathapuram stage protest
Angered by the sexual harassment meted out to a 13-year-old girl, neighbours of the accused in Ramanathapuram staged a protest on Sunday. A few of the protesters also stoned the house of Karuppusamy, one of the five accused.
According to the Ramanathapuram police, in the incident that happened around 11 a.m., the residents, numbering over 200, gathered on Karuppanna Thevar Street and staged a protest.
They wanted the trial to be completed at the earliest and the harshest punishment be given to the accused.
As the number of protesters swelled, the police increased their strength and tried to pacify the tensed public.
Member of Legislative Assembly S. Doraisamy, present and former councillors also rushed to the place. They appealed to the public to calm down.
The residents’ protest affected vehicle movement in the area.
Residents of Nanjundapuram, who had been using the road to reach Sungam after the Corporation dug Nanjundapuram Road for underground drainage work, were the most affected.
The police said that they would file an application on Monday before the Judicial Magistrate VI to have the accused undergo medical examination.
Meanwhile, the members of the Youth Congress staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore Railway Station seeking stringent punishment for the accused. The city police removed them.
