The Coimbatore City Home Guards have set a target to plant 5,000 saplings in schools, colleges, government establishments, industries and public places in 2015.

Towards achieving the target, the organisation has so far planted 100 saplings, says a release.

The Home Guards planted the saplings at Saraswathi Ramachandran Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kuniamuthur, and Government Higher Secondary School, Kuniamuthur.

Area Commander, Home Guards, T.K. Dhanasekar presided over the sapling planting ceremony.

The trees will be watered and maintained by the students of the schools.

A team of the Home Guards, residing near the schools in which the trees have been planted, will monitor the growth of the trees. The motive is to ensure that all the saplings planted grow well and the purpose of green cover is met.

The students who take care of the saplings will be given a certificate of appreciation by the school management and principal.

The saplings are provided by Tamil Nadu Forest Department.
