Home Guards Day celebrated

Retired Home Guards and personnel who had put in meritorious service for 10 years and above were honoured at the Home Guards Day celebration held in the city on Saturday.

Awareness rally

The event started with an awareness rally in which 100 Home Guards took part. This was followed by a march past from the Government Polytechnic College for Women to the Police Community Hall on Avinashi Road. It was flagged off by Sujit Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

The Home Guards donated 50 units of blood at a blood donation camp organised at the Police Community Hall in association with PSG Hospitals and Red Cross Society.

City Police Commissioner K. Periaiah honoured the retired Home Guards and distributed certificates to the personnel for meritorious deeds during disaster management and rescue operations. “There are many people who voluntarily join the Home Guards and extend their service to the society. A total of 15,622 Home Guards are working in Tamil Nadu and about 468 of them participated in the Assembly Elections duties in 2016”, said Mr. Periaiah.

The Home Guards in Coimbatore city has a strength of 110 women and 330 men and they assist the police in duties such as traffic management, night rounds, law and order management, and special assignments.

Deputy Police Commissioner S. Lakshmi (law and order) and P. Perumal (crime) took part in the celebration that was organised under the leadership of C.R. Nagaraj, ACP of Armed Reserve/adjutant Home Guards, T. K. Dhanashekar, Area Commander of the Home Guards, and Thenmozhi Rajaram, Deputy Area Commander.
