Residents of Peelamedu, Murugan Nagar, HUDCO Colony and a host other residential localities raised black flags at houses and staged a protest against the movement of heavy vehicles in the area.
The residents said that iron rods and other articles that get unloaded from trains at the area were taken to destinations on heavy vehicles that passed through the narrow streets in their area. A few persons interested in the trade had planned to take vehicles with up to 60 tonne consignments.
If the government departments that be were to permit this, it would damage not only the roads, which were unfit to hold such heavy vehicle movement, but also water pipelines that were buried along the roads. The departments should therefore not grant permission to allow vehicles to pass through the aforementioned areas.
The residents said that their second demand was that the railway administration had planned to construct a subway after they raised a demand in 2011. The administration had also prepared a blue print. But to date, it had not started the work, which it should commence at the earliest.
Their third demand, the residents said, was that the railway administration and State Highways Department should come together to complete the work near Level Crossing 4 in SIHS Colony. The latter had begun work without acquiring land to construct service lanes on both sides of the road over bridge.
The residents near the level crossing had moved the court to obtain a stay order, which was in effect to date. The departments concerned should take steps to have the stay vacated to take up at the earliest the construction of the service lanes. They should also undertake similar efforts to have the problems near Level Crossing 5 sorted out.
