Heavy rains hit most parts of the Nilgiris on Thursday, causing trees to be uprooted and blocking roads.

According to the police and the fire service departments, trees were uprooted in four places in Udhagamandalam, including the Government Botanical Garden.

Sources said that a Cypress tree was uprooted due to the intense rain, while trees were also reported to have been uprooted near Forest Gate, Ooty Lake and Boat House and along the Udhagamandalam to Manjoor Road, near Lovedale.

Rainfall gauges in the district indicated that a total of almost 60 mm rainfall was recorded in the district till early Thursday. However, the rains continued till late in the evening.

The tree fall along Manjoor Road led to traffic being affected along the route for more than 30 minutes. Traffic flow was restored after the Forest Department cleared the stretch of road.

There were reports of trees being uprooted also in Coonoor and on the Udhagamandalam to Gudalur Road. In Udhagamandalam, many parts of the town were inundated with water, especially the low-lying areas surrounding the Ooty Race Course and Charring Cross.
