Rain lashed Dharmapuri district from Friday night. Karimangalam in Dharmapuri district experienced a maximum rainfall of 245 mm.
Rain started at 8.30 p.m. and lasted the whole night. Due to this, water stagnated at low-lying areas in Dharmapuri town. Due to faulty rain water drainage facilities, knee-deep water stagnated in many streets in Dharmapuri. Two-wheeler riders found it difficult to wade through the stagnated water on the roads.
Water stagnated inside the Adhyamaan Government Higher Secondary School, Bharathiyar ITI, Aavin Milk Dairy, TNSTC bus depot at Bharatipuram and Government Arts College and Hostel for the Adi Dravidar Womens Hostel.
A tamarind tree was uprooted in Pathikalpallam area near Adhyamaankottam Bye-pass Road due to which traffic was affected for some time.
As the underground drainage work is in progress in many areas in Dharmapuri town, the wall of a house at TAMS Colony fell on the pit dug up for the project. Due to this, the inmates of the house could not come out till morning.
Dharmapuri district experienced a maximum rainfall of 365 mm. The rainfall recorded in various places in the district in mm is as follows: Palacode Sugar Mill - 130, Marandaalli - 85, Palacode - 68, Pennagaram - 50, Dharmapuri - 47, Pappireddypatti - 43 mm, Harur – 37 and Collectorate - 111.
The catchment areas of the Thumbalaalli Dam experienced a rainfall of 160 mm, Nagavathi dam - 101, Kesarkuzhi - 25, Chinnar – 65 and Vaniar - 62. All the lakes and ponds in and around Karimangalam were filled to the brim.
In Krishnagiri district, many places received moderate rain from Thursday night. Moderate rain occurred on Saturday morning for about two hours. Rainfall recorded in mm in various places is: Denkanikottai - 76, Anchetti - 43, Thaly - 27, Royakottai - 29, Barur - 63.4 and KRP Dam - 8.2.
Minor landslips
Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed several parts of the Nilgiris on Friday night. With the downpour continuing till the small hours of Saturday, Ooty recorded 71 mm of rainfall and Kotagiri 75 mm. In Naduvattam it was 55 mm, Kundah: 33, Kodanad: 67, Upper Bhavani:35, Glenmorgan: 124, Emerald: 37, Coonoor: 28, Gudalur: 53, Burliar: 44 and Devala: 33.
The heavy rains brought down trees in a few places and triggered minor landslips. An uprooted tree disrupted traffic for sometime on the Ooty-Gudalur Road. It was removed by Fire and Rescue Service personnel with the help of motorists and local people. Another uprooted tree damaged the wind shield of a van near Fingerpost. Fortunately, no one was injured.
In some places like Ebbanad and Agalar near here, a mixture of soil and storm water entered houses in low-lying areas. Standing crops were damaged in some places. In Ooty, many people residing in low-lying areas spent a sleepless night.
Official sources told The Hindu that major damages were not reported from any part of the district.
