Heavy rain on Monday battered the hill town of Valparai about 80 km from here. The rivers in the hill town were in spate. In the last two-days, Valparai was experiencing heavy rain.

On Monday, Koolangal, Sholayar, and Vazhaithottam rivers were in spate.


District Collector M. Karunagaran has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Valparai taluk on June 25 and 26 in view the heavy rain.

To compensate the holidays schools and colleges will function on July 13 and July 20).

Schools and colleges in other taluks of Coimbatore will function as usual.


Rain has improved the storage in many of the reservoirs in the district including those under the Parambikulam – Aliyar Project (PAP) and in Siruvani that caters to the drinking water requirements of Coimbatore district.

In the last 24-hours that ended at 08.30 a.m. on Monday, the district witnessed a total rainfall of 274.40 mm and an average rainfall of 22.87 mm. Rainfall recorded at various places are as follows: Airport Peelamedu 0.20 mm, Pollachi 11, TNAU 0.20, Cincona 73, Chinnakallar 66, Valparai PAP 49, Shoalayar 60, Parambikulam 44, Aliyar 5.4, Thirumurthy 1, Upper Nirar 66, Lower Nirar 46, Upper Aliyar 20, Kadamparai 6, VLP camp 49, Vettaikaranpudur 6.4, Makkinampatti 9, Manacadavu 15, Nallur 2, Navamalai 7, and Valparai taluk office 75 mm.

Siruvani catchment areas recorded a rainfall of 36 mm and its foot hills recorded 18 mm. The storage in the dam on Monday was closer to 7 ft above the dead storage level.The following is the storage in various reservoirs (full reservoir level in brackets): Sholayar 116.26 ft (160), Parambikulam 09.34 (72), Aliyar dam 63.40 (120), Thirumurthi 4.52 (60), Amaravathi 32.92 ft (90).

The TNSTC depot at Valparai bazaar was inundated.
