Though no new dengue cases were reported from the Coimbatore Corporation on Tuesday, the civic body officials are not taking it lightly. Of the three cases the district witnessed today, two were from Annur and one from Somanur.
Corporation Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy said that the civic body had taken on contract 100 workers, exclusively for fighting mosquitoes. Their job would be to fog localities, spray larvicides and remove stagnant water from containers. With this the number of workers engaged in anti-mosquito operations has increased to more than 200.
The Health Department has asked the Commissioner to form health teams to monitor anti-larval activities.
The Department has also asked the Commissioner to ask its workers to focus on buildings under construction, where water would be stored in drums, and also locked houses, where at the rear, water could stagnate in discarded containers, said R. Damodaran, Deputy Director, Health, Coimbatore.
Another suggestion that the Department has given is for forming a rapid action team under Deputy Commissioner, Corporation. Dr. Damodaran also said that the Department was concerned about Breteau, House and Container indices – indicators of mosquito breeding at a locality. The cases thus far in the district were sporadic and at the present level, there was no necessity to panic.
Dengue cases
Meanwhile, there are nine dengue cases at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Of those two were reported from Coimbatore Corporation limits. The remaining were from the district’s rural areas and neighbouring areas.
