An uzhavar sandhai will be established this year at Gudalur, said the Chairman and Managing Director, State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) and Monitoring Officer for the Nilgiris, N. Govindan, while speaking to presspersons here on Monday.
He pointed out that a suitable place had already been selected.
Adverting to the shortcomings in the uzhavar sandhai here, he said that the authorities concerned had been instructed to improve the road and provide an ATM facility. Steps would also be taken to provide a public convenience and communication facility, he said.
Pointing out that the government had provided funds to various departments to set right amenities damaged by floods and landslides, Mr. Govindan said that the administration was in the process of identifying suitable places for putting up permanent shelters for people residing in areas vulnerable to natural calamities.
Stating that under the Kalaignar Housing Scheme 700 beneficiaries had been identified so far in the district, he added that since the practice of putting up thatched houses was not followed in the Nilgiris, the government would be requested to relax the conditions.
Later, the official inspected some of the flood-affected areas like Madithorai where restoration works were in progress.
Earlier, he presided over a meeting in which the progress of various schemes was reviewed.
Among those who participated in the meeting were the Nilgiris Collector Archana Patnaik, District Revenue Officer S. Kuppuswamy and Project Director, Hill Area Development Programme, R.K. Bharathy.
