The Public Health Department has directed Government medical college hospitals across Tamil Nadu to conduct 56 speciality medical camps in their respective districts before April 5.

Further, specialist institutions such as the Institute of Child Health, Institute of Social Obstetrics and Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children, Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Government Arignar Anna Memorial Cancer Hospital, and Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine, all of which are at Chennai, have also been directed to conduct camps, official sources told The Hindu here on Wednesday.

The Director of Medical Education S. Geethalakshmi wrote a letter to 30 government medical colleges and healthcare institutions directing them to conduct the camp.

The Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) will conduct three camps across the district. It has already identified the locations and is liaising with the local bodies to make arrangements for the camps.

Endoscopy camp

Sources in the CMCH said that the first camp would be held at Podanur and would primarily be an endoscopy camp.

The second would be held at Karumbukadai and would focus on non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hyper-tension, breast and cervical cancers.

The final one would be an ophthalmology camp and would be held within city limits. While a site has been identified at Gandhipuram, the location would be finalised soon.

Hospital officials said that three specialists would be deployed for each of these camps along with several staff nurses and paramedical staff.

In order to ensure a wide reach for the medical camps, the hospitals have been directed to rope in local elected representatives as well as the media.

Campaign

Further, an information, education and communication campaign should also be conducted in the locality at least two days in advance of the camps.

The letter also urges the hospitals to ensure all its departments take part. The camps would be held between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. in locations such as community halls and schools.
