Gang of ex-convicts arrested

Singanallur Police have arrested a gang of ex-convicts, including three women, after they were reportedly caught red-handed by the police while trying to attempt a house break-in near Irugur. The police recovered a knife, a steel rod, a rope and chilli powder from them.

The accused were identified as C. Veerabathran (46) from Vellalore who has about 40 cases against him and was said to be the leader of the gang, K. Christopher alias Nagaraj (23) of NK Palayam, M. Thilakavathi Lakshmi (24), K. Shanthi (29) and R. Kamachi (24), all the three women from Arivoli Nagar in Kovaipudur.

Inspector Salai Ram Sakthivel said that they were intercepted on Chinniyampalayam Road in Irugur in the wee hours of Friday.

Woman dies

A 24-year-old woman, who attempted self-immolation on June 14, succumbed to burn injuries on Friday. Her husband, who suffered 50 per cent burns, is undergoing treatment at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

Kuniyamuthur Police said that the victim R. Papitha (24) married Rathineesh Sharma in 2012 and have two children.

The police said that Rathineesh Sharma was an alcoholic and the woman who was upset over this reportedly doused herself with kerosene and set it ablaze on Tuesday.

Rathineesh who tried to rescue her also suffered burns.

The case is investigated by the Revenue Division Officer as the victim was married for less than seven years.

Arrested for third time

Sagadevan (50) of Sastri Nagar at Sanganoor Pallam was arrested by the police for the third time for assaulting his wife.

The police said that he was earlier arrested twice and had undergone seven years imprisonment (from 2005 to 2011) for an attempt on his wife’s life.

Inspector of the All Woman Police Station (Central) D. Sheela said that the accused, an alcoholic, used to harass his wife Krishnaveni.

He had earlier attempted to murder his wife. In this case he was booked under section 307 (attempt to murder) and was convicted. On his release from jail in 2011, he again assaulted his wife and was arrested by the Rathinapuri Police.
