A futile attempt was made to loot an unguarded State Bank of India ATM near Tirupur early Sunday morning, police said. The revolving camera in the ATM was found removed and the outer part of the machine broken. Police said it appeared that the miscreants could not break open the strong chest containing the money and hurriedly left the spot once public started moving around as daylight broke.

A customer who came to withdraw the money, noticed the damage and immediately informed police.

Senior police officials, including Commissioner of Police, Mr.Senthamaraikannan inspected the spot.

Police said there was no security guard in the ATM.

They quoted a senior bank official as having stated that Rs.25 lakh was placed in the ATM on January 29 and the balance after withdrawals for three days would be known only after examining details in the Bank’s branch in that town.
