A wild elephant strayed into human habitations in Coimbatore

Four people were killed and two injured in an elephant attack on human habitations near Podanur in Coimbatore in the early hours of Friday.

The deceased were identified as Gayatri (12), Nagarathinam (50), Jothimani (68), and Palanisamy (73).

The police said the tusker initially moved into Ganeshapuram near Podanur around 3.30 a.m. and damaged the house of Vijayakumar and stamped his daughter Gayatri to death. Vijayakumar also suffered a fracture of one of his hands.

The elephant later moved to Kanjikkonampalayam near Podanur around 5 a.m. and killed Nagarathinam and Jothimani. Palanisamy suffered serious internal injuries in the attack and died at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Other injured persons in the attack were admitted to the CMCH.

The elephant has reportedly moved towards Vellalore side and the Forest Department is initiating steps to chase it back to the forest.

Conservator of Forests (Coimbatore Circle) I. Anwardeen said a team of experts to dart the elephant was ready and kumkis Sujay, Paari, Mariappan and Kalleem were being taken for assistance.
