Former president of the Tamil Nadu unit of Janata Dal (secular) G.A. Vadivelu died of illness at a private hospital in Salem on Wednesday

Former president of the Tamil Nadu unit of Janata Dal (secular) G.A. Vadivelu died of illness at a private hospital in Salem on Wednesday. He was 92.

Born in Golahalli in 1925, Vadivelu had briefly worked as revenue inspector under the British rule before joining the freedom movement.

Jayaprakash Narayan follower

He later moved away from the Indian National Congress and became a follower of socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan and joined the Janata Party in 1977.

He was the party’s state president for eight years and national vice-president for two years.

Vadivelu also took part in Puducherry’s freedom struggle.

In 2002, he had rejoined the Congress. TNCC president EVKS Elangovan condoled Vadivelu’s death.
